Tyto alba -British Wildlife Centre, Surrey, England-8a

The barn owl (Tyto alba) is one of the most widespread land birds, found on all continents except Antarctica. It nests in tree hollows, old buildings and caves and breeds at any time of year, sometimes twice if there is a glut of small rodents, its main prey. The female is slightly larger than the male, with a wingspan of up to 109cm and weighing 0.5kg. The barn owl is generally light grey with buff markings but has a distinctive white, heart-shaped facial disc with a brown rim line. It is the most mythologized of all owls and usually seen as a harbinger of death.
