Beavers (Castor canadensis) are among the largest of all rodents. Family groups of beavers live in large nests, called lodges, in or near forest streams or small lakes. Beavers eat wood and other tough plant foods, which have to be soaked in water before being eaten.
They use their large front teeth to gnaw through the bases of small trees. Sections of these logs are transported back to the lodge via a system of canals dug into the forest. If necessary, beavers will also dam a stream with debris to make a pool deep enough to store their food. A beaver colony may maintain a dam for several generations. The lodge has underwater entrances so beavers can swim out to their food supply even when the pool is frozen.
