The golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), which is widespread throughout Eurasia, North America and Northern Africa, has been shot and poisoned by landowners and farmers. Working in open countryside, the golden eagle has to be a canny hunter. It patrols at enormous height and, once it has spotted its prey, it flies off, gradually losing height. It then roars in at high speed, almost at ground level, to hit its unsuspecting victim. It can reach a speed of 300kph.
